This year’s Spring Lecture Series theme is Migration.

Migration is essential to human survival. Whether driven by the spirit of discovery or hope for a better life, whether forced by conflict or required for access to resources – massive change alters us in small ways and large. How do we adapt to these uncertainties in a mindful way? What are the predominant patterns we can learn from and look towards? Our four lectures explore conflict-driven migration, climate change migration, regional migration that crosses state lines and interplanetary migration to Mars. We hope that this assembled group of experts can help us appreciate how migration can be a uniting force.

Speaker Bios – Migration to Mars

Jerry Van Eyck, !melk Landscape Architecture
Jerry Van Eyck is an award-winning landscape architect and urban designer who founded the New York design firm, !melk. After attending Eindhoven Design Academy in the Netherlands for industrial design, Jerry owned a small design firm and did freelance work for other design firms in Netherlands. He soon joined West 8, a landscape architecture firm in Rotterdam, where he worked for 18 years, ten of which he was a Partner. Jerry relocated to New York to set-up West 8’s New York branch after winning the International Design Competition to develop Governors Island in New York into a park. Two years later, he started !melk.

Jerry’s background in industrial design and extensive experience in both landscape and urban design allow him to examine projects at both the macro and micro-scales. !melk seeks to create unique solutions to site-specific issues while remaining ecologically responsible and creating timeless and socially-responsible designs. Jerry has earned a reputation as a specialist in the design of complex urban interventions, including waterfronts and historical sites, which can act as catalysts for economic development.

Jerry serves as a visiting critic at the Harvard University GSD, The Yale School of Architecture, Columbia University’s GSAPP, and the Illinois Institute of Technology. Currently, Jerry serves as Adjunct Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and is a member of the Board of Governors of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture.

Dr. Olga Bannova, Sasakawa International Center for Space Architecture, University of Houston
Olga Bannova is at the forefront of the extreme-environment and space architecture research and design fields, both as a practitioner and educator. After attending the Moscow Architectural Institute and working as an architect in Moscow for 14 years, Olga decided she wanted to further her education in the pioneering field of space architecture. She enrolled at the University of Houston’s Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture’s Sasakawa International Center for Space Architecture, a space architecture program and laboratory. She wanted a challenging program that would push her design thinking to the edge.

She earned two master’s degrees, one in architecture in December 2001, and the other in space architecture in December 2005. She is now a professor at the university, where she conducts research on design influences for different gravity conditions, habitat concepts for extreme environments on Earth, hydroponics laboratories, and emergency response design.

Last year, she finished her PhD in Architecture at Chalmers University in Sweden.
