This free event is an opportunity to celebrate the season in the recently-completed Howard County Roger Carter Community Center, to network with fellow AIABaltimore members, and learn how you can become more involved in the chapter. Meet AIABaltimore President-Elect Tom Liebel, FAIA, members of AIABaltimore’s board of directors and committees, and AIABaltimore staff.
Tom Liebel, FAIA and the project team will present the design of the Roger Carter Community Center & Burgess Mill Station residential development, a joint effort between Howard County Housing and Howard County Recreation and Parks. The project team includes: Marks, Thomas Architects, The Stavrou Companies and Hamel Builders. The project comprises a 198 unit housing development and 43,000 square foot Community Center on a redevelopment parcel adjacent to Ellicott City’s historic Main Street. The project is currently anticipating LEED-NC Gold Certification.
Tom Liebel, FAIA is a long-time advocate for integrating sustainable design principles into a variety of projects. As a principal at Marks, Thomas Architects, he has an extensive portfolio of adaptive use and historic preservation projects as well as being one of the first 25 LEED Accredited Professionals in the country. Tom currently serves as chair of the Maryland Green Building Council and chair of Baltimore City’s Commission on Historical and Architectural Preservation (CHAP).
The program will also include a presentation by Davin Hong, AIA, Principal, RTKL Associates, Inc., who will present an inspiring proposal for Baltimore City Public Schools historic $1.1 billion investment to leverage “Community Investment Zones” as a holistic neighborhood revitalization strategy bringing together improvements, services and amenities into a targeted area around the new schools. Davin has been engaging leaders of neighborhoods and organizations involved in community development and schools to hear thoughts and gain support.
