Architect’s Portfolio: A Collection of Watercolors, Drawings & Sketches by David Gleason, FAIA
September 4, 2014 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Architect’s Portfolio: A Collection of Watercolors, Ink Drawings & Pencil Sketches highlights the range of hand drawings by David Gleason, FAIA, over a period of fifty years, initially as an architectural student, then as an architect designing and delineating various building projects and as a watercolorist recording the evolving nature of Fell’s Point. The exhibit illustrates his lifelong interest in hand drawing sparked by his architectural education and as an architect developing ideas and designs for his firm, David H. Gleason Associates, Inc., with hand drawings in the form of sketches, renderings and construction documents.
Entering the University of Virginia as a freshman in 1963, David Gleason initially studied architecture through various hand drawing exercises in the form of watercolor, ink, and pencil drawings. These exercises were the remnants of the academic traditions of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris that had influenced American architectural education since the 1890s. Today, with the rapid rise in the use of computers for all facets of architectural design and practice, hand drawing as an architectural tool has vanished from both architectural schools and offices.
With his introduction to watercolors at school, David Gleason has continued his interest in this medium, not only in rendering architectural projects in his firm, but also producing numerous sketches of the changing nature of Fell’s Point over the last thirty years. Through these various mediums of hand drawing, David Gleason has sought to create images that engage and stimulate our interest in the architecture and environment that surrounds us.
Architect’s Portfolio: A Collection of Watercolors, Ink Drawings & Pencil Sketches will be on display at the AIABaltimore Chapterhouse from September 4 through October 29.
Public Hours: Monday – Friday, 9 am – 5 pm
