A Case Study of Structural Engineering and Emergency Response in Nepal

On April 25, 2015 a devastating earthquake occurred outside of the City of Kathmandu in Nepal. The earthquake resulted in the loss of thousands of lives and caused billions of dollars of damage. Since the earthquake, Nepal continues to recover.
Immediately following the earthquake, Jon Tung mobilized with the Fairfax County Urban Search and Rescue Team (USA‐1), a multi‐disciplinary team sponsored by the Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department and the United States Agency for International Development. Jon has volunteered and has been a part of this team since 1999. In
Nepal, Jon served as the lead Structural Engineer while the team spent multiple weeks searching collapsed buildings for survivors and stabilizing historic landmarks, using his years of knowledge and experience.
