AIABaltimore Exhibition Reception: AIABaltimore Design Excellence in K-12 School Facilities

October 3, 2013 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

AIABaltimore Exhibition Receptions:

There’s no better way to see 35 schools in one room than visiting the  AIABaltimore Design Excellence in K-12 School Facilities, TONIGHT, from 5 – 7 p.m.  We have collected recent Maryland K-12 projects that exemplify innovation and sustainability. Why?  In short, because Baltimore has a history-making opportunity to vastly improve the quality of its education, AND its communities:  Baltimore City Public Schools’ 21st Century Schools 10 year plan will make  new school construction and rehabilitation possible.

And research shows that WHERE you learn affects HOW WELL you learn. The School of the Built Environment at the University of Salford found that, “Overall, almost three quarters of the variation in pupil performance could be attributed to design and environmental factors.  All things being equal, the academic performance of a child in the best environment could be expected to be 25% better than an equivalent child in the “poorest” classroom environment.

Baltimore Business Journal’s Jay Brodie put it bluntly, “NO MORE SCHOOL BUILDINGS THAT COULD BE CONFUSED WITH FORTRESSES OR PRISONS.”

Now is the time to tell the City how we want our new public schools to look, feel and function.  AIABaltimore’s glimpse inside Maryland’s most inspiring classrooms is meant to engage a diverse audience of stakeholders including students, parents, teachers, and administrators, community members, and design professionals, arming us all with knowledge about environmentally-sustainable learning environments that will contribute to students’ academic success, and the health, well-being, and vitality of Baltimore communities.

The exhibition features projects from 20 local architecture firms:

Becker Morgan Group, Brennan + Company Architects, Cho Benn Holback + Associates, Inc., Colimore Architects, Design Collective, Inc., Grimm + Parker Architects, GWWO/Architects, Hord Coplan Macht, JMT Architecture, JRS Architects, Marks, Thomas Architects, Penza Bailey Architects, Read & Company Architects, Rubeling & Associates, Inc., Smolen Emr Ilkovitch Architects, SHW Group, TCA Architects, Terralogos Eco Architecture, WMCRP Architects, and Ziger/Snead Architects.
