The 102 year old Parkway Theatre was recently given new life thanks to the Maryland Film Festival and an $18.2 million dollar renovation.Architects Ziger/Snead celebrated the building’s past by preserving the layers of its many iterations, resulting in a rescued ruin that incorporates modern design with a rich history.
Originally designed by Baltimore architect Oliver B. Wright, the Parkway Theatre opened on October 23, 1915. It was modeled on London’s West End Theatre and envisioned to be a 1,100 seat vaudeville house. But the Parkway was adapted for much more over the course of the 20th century. It hosted live performances, movie shows, and radio program recordings. It became a movie and performance theater, the 5 West, from 1956 to 1978, after which portions of it were used for a number of uses before falling into disrepair for decades .
In 2017, as part of the 19th annual Maryland Film Festival, The Parkway Theatre was reopened as the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Parkway. The site joins the historic 414 seat movie theatre with two state of the art 80 seat theatres and will serve as a site for the MICA and Johns Hopkins joint film programs. Come see one of the latest pieces of Baltimore’s history preserved!
