1.5 AIA/CES LUs available

The “Early Women of Architecture in Maryland” exhibit continues to travel around Maryland! It will be on display from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm during the monthly Open House of the Historic Silver Spring B&O Railroad Station (8100 Georgia Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20910), co-sponsored by Montgomery Preservation Inc. and the Silver Spring Historical Society—a family-friendly event that includes a model railroad display and historical memorabilia.

At noon, Jillian Storms AIA, the exhibit’s curator, will share fascinating stories of trailblazing women professionals and their works of architecture. The focus will be on Katherine Cutler Ficken (1911-1968), a Silver Spring, Maryland resident and the first woman to be licensed as an architect in Maryland. Afterwards, there will be a tour of the American Instrument Company on Georgia Avenue, which Katherine designed, with an ice cream stop at Moorenko’s within the complex.

The exhibit showcases the stories and project images of twelve trailblazing women who practice between 1920s-1960s with perseverance and determination that serves as inspiration today. Other architects in the exhibit who impacted projects in Montgomery County include:

  • Rose Ishbel Greely (1887-1969) – 1st woman to obtain an architecture license in Washington, DC, with design projects in Chevy Chase;
  • Chloethiel Woodard Smith (1910–1992) – Prominent in DC with projects in Bethesda & Rockville;
  • Mary Jack Craigo (1920-2001) – Bethesda resident who for many years the only woman in the Architectural Engineering Design Branch of the National Institutes of Health.
  • Shirley Kerr Kennard (b. 1929) – whose Chevy Chase practice with her husband involved over 500 projects in the Washington DC metro area.

This exhibit would not have been possible without the generous support of the Maryland Humanities Council; the Baltimore Architecture Foundation; Cho Benn Holback + Associates; Hord Coplan Macht; AECOM; Ayers Saint Gross; EHT Traceries; Geraldine Pontius, AIA; K.Lechleiter Architect LLC; Myrna Poirier AIA Architect; Penza Bailey Architects; SM+P Architects; Ziger/Snead LLP Architects; and the in-kind reproduction services of Maryland Reprographics Inc.
