Join the AIABaltimore Historic Resources Committee for a post-construction tour of Whitehall Mill with architects Alexander Design Studio and developer Terra Nova Ventures.
Whitehall Mill is the historic renovation of the old Clipper Mill which was constructed from 1865 to 1875. Before the construction of this building, Whitehall Flour Mill resided on this site. It later became part of the Mount Vernon-Woodberry Cotton Duck Company, which in the late 1800’s produced 80% of the world’s cotton duck, twine, yarn, lamp wick, sheeting, and other cotton products. Throughout the years many tenants have called Whitehall Mill home, including Purity Paper Vessels, I. Sekine Co., a Japanese toothbrush manufacturer, and Penguin Books. The structure is currently being converted into apartments, offices and a marketplace for the Hampden-Woodberry neighborhood.
To stand up to the flooding of the Jones Falls, the mill has been outfitted with aquarium-strength glass, more than a dozen floodgates, and the mechanical and electrical systems were moved to the second floor. An evacuation bridge was installed on the second floor, which crosses over Clipper Mill Road and doubles as a sign for the development.
After the tour, join us for happy hour at Birroteca next door.
