Maryland Building Rehabilitation Code

In light of the work of the Mayor’s Safe Art Space Task Force and Mayor Pugh’s executive order providing leeway for artists living and working in buildings with code violations, AIABaltimore is making the 2001 Maryland Building Rehabilitation Code available for reference online.
The purpose of the Code is to encourage the continued use of existing buildings by “permitting repairs, renovations, modifications, reconstructions, additions and changes of occupancy that maintain or improve the health, safety, and welfare in existing buildings, without requiring full compliance with the building code.”
The Code is currently in effect under Maryland law.

In addition, the Baltimore DHCD has a database of code modifications that provides precedents of alternative paths to compliance.
