Opening Doors, Building Community: Embracing Fall with AIA Baltimore

There’s a certain buzz in the air this time of year; the kind that stirs your senses and lifts your spirits as the first leaves begin to fall and everything is bathed in that golden, autumn glow—that wonderfully over-the-top season when pumpkin spice finds its way into everything from lattes to candles. It’s something deeper. It’s a feeling that takes me back to the crispness of new notebooks, the smell of freshly sharpened pencils, and those familiar butterflies that fluttered with excitement and anticipation as the first day of school approached.

Every fall, that same energy returns. For me, the start of a new school year always felt like a fresh beginning—a time to grow, learn, and connect. Now, as a parent, I see that same spark in my kids’ eyes, and it brings all those memories rushing back in the most heartwarming way.

Whether it’s nostalgia or the extra caffeine from my daily pumpkin spice fix, something about this season makes me want to get up, get out, and dive into everything the city has to offer. Thankfully, fall in Baltimore means a packed calendar of programs and events from AIA Baltimore—and there’s truly something for everyone.

My own introduction to this incredible city nearly 20 years ago began with volunteering during Baltimore Architecture Week and the AIA Baltimore Design Awards. What once was a week-long celebration has blossomed into a month-long tribute to the people, places, and ideas that shape Charm City. October is now full of opportunities to discover, connect, and be inspired.

One of the most exciting traditions of the season—Doors Open Baltimore—kicked off a few days ago. This event invites the public to step inside some of the city’s most iconic and unexpected spaces, offering a unique chance to experience Baltimore from the inside out. And we need volunteers to help make it happen! Whether you’re new to town or have been here for years, volunteering is a fantastic way to explore the city, meet new people, and contribute to something meaningful. Bring a friend, sign up together, and help us welcome the thousands of curious minds who come out each year. We’re aiming to recruit over 200 volunteers, and every single one plays a key role in making the event a success.

Also on the horizon is one of our most anticipated events of the year: the AIA Baltimore Design Awards, taking place on October 17, 2025. It’s a night to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our region’s design community—an inspiring evening that recognizes

creativity, excellence, and impact. Be sure to keep an eye out for ticket information—you won’t want to miss it.

Of course, these are just a few highlights of what’s in store. The coming weeks are filled with exciting programs, gatherings, and chances to engage with your community and celebrate the power of design. What I’ve mentioned here is just the beginning.

To stay up to date on everything happening this fall, make sure you’re subscribed to our newsletter and following AIA Baltimore on social media. You’ll get the latest news, behind-the-scenes stories, and plenty of ways to get involved.

I hope to see you soon at one or several of our events. In the meantime, enjoy all the beauty this season has to offer. Savor your fall beverages, crunch through some leaves, and soak in the cozy, creative, and community-driven spirit of autumn.

Happy Fall—and happy pumpkining!
