May and June are filled with graduations and excitement as many people take the next step in their journey toward a career. As we welcome new graduates into our firms, I hope we remember the support we received—or wish we had received—and work to provide strong mentorship that is meaningful, supportive, and lasting. I invite all new architectural graduates to connect with their peers and community through our Emerging Professionals Committee.
Mentorship remains essential well beyond the internship phase of our profession. Recently, we hosted a Mid-Career Happy Hour at the Center to explore how our chapter can better support mid-career architects through programs, conversation, and mentorship. If you are in this stage of your career, we are planning additional events in June and would love your input. If you are a principal or management leader, your perspective and support matter just as much. Investing in architects at every stage strengthens our profession and reinforces public trust in our shared commitment to knowledge, continuity, and leadership. Intentional leadership begins at the top.
Our AIA Baltimore Chapter has several committees that support professional growth and shared interests. A few to explore—expand your knowledge, share your expertise, and get involved in the opportunities they provide:
This group meets monthly and recently received a grant to support an urban design and placemaking workshop. AIA Baltimore is leading the initiative in collaboration with Bmore NOMA and Beloved Community Services Corporation. The Thurgood Marshall Historic Corridor Urban Design Workshop is an interdisciplinary workshop and charrette series focused on advancing community health, well-being, and inclusive growth through design. Applications are now open for the Community Design Opportunity for Students. Please spread the word and consider joining this committee if you would like to participate.
This committee meets every other month and features a timely practice management topic at each session. The discussions are open, engaging, and designed to encourage participation from everyone at the table.
Committee on the Environment and Resiliency
This committee brings together professionals interested in environmental responsibility and resilient construction. With climate change affecting our communities every day, this is an important group for all of us to support and engage with.
This committee hosts events that deepen appreciation for the restoration and adaptive reuse of Baltimore’s historic buildings and neighborhoods. Its tours and garden party are especially popular.
Building Enclosure Council -Baltimore Committee
This committee brings together building professionals to exchange ideas on building design and science. It meets monthly and offers programs and workshops focused on building enclosures.
As always, I look forward to seeing you at our next gathering. If you are looking for a mentor—or hoping to become one—join us at an upcoming event to start building those connections and strengthening your community. If you would like to schedule a call or Zoom meeting to continue the conversation, please reach out to me.
