October brings new opportunities for our Chapter to continue to connect and engage. Our Baltimore Chapter has an extraordinary, shared resource in the Center, located in the historic building at One Charles Street. More than a physical space, the Center can serve as a welcoming place for architects, designers, students, educators, allied professionals, and community partners. Its central location gives us a visible platform to exchange ideas, build relationships, showcase design excellence, and connect our profession in a more meaningful way with communities across Baltimore.
As a hub for architecture and design, the Center can help AIA Baltimore advance the Chapter’s mission by bringing people together around learning, mentorship, advocacy, collaboration, and public engagement. By using our space more intentionally, we can strengthen professional connections, welcome new voices into our community, support emerging talent, and create more opportunities for the public to understand how thoughtful design contributes to a stronger city.
As we continue exploring each strategic goal, this month I am focusing on maximizing the Center’s value. That means treating it as an active, accessible resource shaped by the needs and ideas of our architectural community. In the upcoming year, AIA Baltimore Secretary Wadiah Akbar will lead a task force to explore strategies for shaping the Center’s future and maximizing its potential.
Together, we can:
- Increase the number and variety of events held at the Center, creating more reasons for members and partners to gather.
- Make the Center top choice for existing programs, including continuing education, committee meetings, mentoring, and collaborative working sessions.
- Encourage member-led pop-up programs, exhibitions, and conversations that respond to timely issues and invite participation from new audiences.
- Strengthen public engagement through the bookstore, open houses, design programs, exhibitions, and charrettes that make architecture more visible and accessible.
How can you help maximize the Design Center’s impact?
- Attend or volunteer at an upcoming Design Center event, and invite a colleague or emerging professional to join you.
- Bring people together. Consider whether a design-focused group, community partner, or professional network you know could use or rent the Center for a gathering.
- Use the Center as an extension of your practice. Keep it in mind for office events, learning opportunities, project conversations, and programs that benefit the broader profession.
- Share an idea. Suggest a pop-up event, exhibition, workshop, or community conversation that would benefit Baltimore’s architectural community.
- Join the Task Force. Help explore how the Center can evolve to serve our community in the years ahead.
