Why was it important for you to take part in CivicLAB?
I’ve always thought it was important that, as professionals who help to shape our environments, we use our particular talents and experience to improve the lives and communities we touch. It was also a great opportunity for networking, and to better understand the intersection of the public, the design community, and the government.
Since participating in CivicLAB what new Leadership opportunities have you discovered?
I am currently the Co-Chair of the Emerging Professionals Committee, a position I have held since January 2015. We act as a voice and resource for architecture students, recent graduates and those studying for licensure, as well as recently licensed architects.  This has allowed me to provide guidance and assistance to local universities as well as those I work with.
How can architects/designers become better Advocates for the profession and the built environment?
In order to be a strong advocate, you must first be knowledgeable and up-to-speed on the topics that are and will be affecting the profession. You must also be willing to share your time and your knowledge with others and truly get involved.  As design professionals we have an obligation to improve our communities and the lives of those who occupy that space, while also minimizing our impact on the planet.
What makes this an exciting time to be a Citizen Architect in Baltimore?
Construction’s contribution to the economy has bounced back since the recession and many ideas that were put on hold are able to be revisited and realized. There is a lot of great history in Baltimore as evidenced in many of the old facades, and I sense that there is a strong belief in retaining that history.  Simultaneously, studies have shown that the city’s population may be declining.  This is a very important time to create inviting and beautiful spaces in Baltimore.
Any hobbies outside of leadership, advocacy, architecture?
I play a lot of intramural sports through several Baltimore social leagues and I really enjoy skiing. I’m also a bit of a movie buff.
