Wheelabrator Tour: The Baltimore Incinerator

Entering the city from the south, you’ve definitely taken note of the large smokestack along the highway. This stack is part of Waste Innovation’s Baltimore Wheelabrator facility also known as BRESCO (Baltimore Refuse Energy Systems Company), a waste-to-energy facility that has been operating since 1985. This facility manages nearly a million tons of waste each year, converting it into renewable energy to help power the city and diverting excess waste from landfills.

Join Baltimore Architecture Foundation as we open the doors for a rare opportunity to see inside of this facility. Attendees will witness what is behind the iconic circle window, potentially meet Gwynda the Good Wheel of the West, discover how composting is tied into this facility, all while learning about the process that turns trash into energy!

Please note, this will be nearly a 90-minute tour requiring attendees to climb two flights of stairs. Regretfully, this is not an accessible tour. Baltimore Architecture Foundation also would like to acknowledge that while waste-to-energy is a divisive topic, please utilize this tour to explore the inner workings of the city and keep any questions respectful.
