SUMMARY:Thermally Modified Wood: A sustainable solution (Virgina Tech)
DESCRIPTION:Credits:  6.0 AIA LU \nWhen:  Thursday\, October 28\, 2021 \nWhere:  Cambria Hotel and Suites | 1 Helen Heneghan Way\, Rockville\, MD 20850 | Parking is free for participants \nCost:  $50 \nAbout this Course \nIn this course we will explore Thermally Modified Wood (TMW) as a material for interior and exterior uses. TMW are wood species harvested in a sustainable manner in the United States and subjected to high temperatures to modify the properties and color. TMW is chemical free\, has high decay resistance\, is more dimensionally stable\, and is a renewable\, sustainable way to sequester carbon in a useful building material. Due to the darker color of TMW\, it has been used as an alternative to many tropical hardwoods in decking and siding applications. We will discuss what is TMW\, how it is made\, its sustainability\, uses\, lessons in specification/application and a trip to visit a structure where it has been used in multiple applications. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Best Products “Tilt” Showroom (Doors Open Baltimore)
DESCRIPTION:OCT 28.  |  5:00 – 5:30 PM\nBest Products “Tilt” Showroom \nSuggested Donation: $10 \nThis presentation will dive into the history of the Best Products “Tilt” Showroom\, a lost post-modern landmark in the suburbs of Baltimore. The building opened its doors in October of 1978 in the Eudowood Plaza shopping center in Towson and immediately drew praise\, criticism and crowds of curious shoppers. This eye-popping architectural illusion was more than just a publicity gimmick; it was a surrealist-inspired work of art that sought to fuse public sculpture and architecture. \nREGISTER HERE
