SUMMARY:Idlewylde\, a Balt. Co. Community on the City Line: History & Architecture
DESCRIPTION:About this event\nIdlewylde\, a community of more than 700 homes situated on the Chinquapin Run and Herring Run-B watershed\, is the oldest of the suburban neighborhoods of South Towson. The community has a mix of housing styles characteristic of the development of suburban neighborhoods during the time of its growth\, ranging from 1920s bungalows and small Cape Cods to brick Colonials and Mid-Century Modern designs. Its development differed greatly from that of its younger neighbors\, Anneslie and Stoneleigh\, chiefly owing to the development of The Alameda as an arterial road terminating in Idlewylde and to the northward extension of Baltimore City in 1918 to Idlewylde’s southern border. \nThe Idlewylde neighborhood partially occupies land that was once Beulah\, the estate of Joshua Regester (1816-1906)\, a Baltimore brassfounder whose bells graced Baltimore City Hall and other buildings of note. Beulah once extended north to Stevenson’s Woods (now the Country Club of Maryland golf course)\, south almost to today’s City-County line\, west to the Birckhead estate (“Anneslie”) and the Brown estate (“Stoneleigh”) and east to the Herring Run tributary. The family’s farmstead and summer home\, built in 1853\, is the oldest building standing in south Towson. It and the Idlewylde United Methodist Church from 1917\, the oldest house of worship in the area\, are listed on the Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties. \nThis special program is hosted in partnership with the Friends of Maryland’s Olmsted Parks & Landscapes as part of their Olmsted 200 programming\, a nationwide celebration of the firm’s work and influence\, on the Bicentennial Anniversary of Frederick Law Olmsted’s birth. In 1928 the developer contacted the Olmsted Brothers\, the renowned landscape architects responsible for designing the City neighborhoods of Roland Park and Homeland\, to commission a street layout for the undeveloped northern section contoured by the ravines of Herring Run\, but the project was nipped in the bud by the stock market crash and ensuing Great Depression. However\, Idlewylde turns out to have an unexpected connection to Frederick Law Olmsted. \nCome learn of this as well as celebrate the heritage of this unique community as shared by two Idlewylde community members who will be available to answer participants’ questions after the presentation. \nABOUT THE PRESENTERS: \nPaul Romney is a longtime resident of the Idlewylde Community and serves as the newsletter editor and secretary of the Community Association. He is a professional historian specializing in the history of Canada. \nBryan Fisher\, AIA\, NCARB\, is a registered architect and a historic preservation specialist. He has contributed significantly to numerous important architectural projects including work for the U.S. Capitol\, the National Archives\, the Smithsonian Institution\, dozens of National Park Service sites throughout the U.S.\, the GSA\, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers\, NAVFAC\, Washington College\, and the Maryland Historical Society. In his spare time he enjoys sailing\, exploring Idlewylde\, and working on his Mid-Century Modern home. \nABOUT THIS SERIES: \nThe Baltimore Architecture Foundation and Baltimore Heritage\, Inc. have been hosting this Friday Virtual Histories Series of live lunchtime presentations and virtual tours since the start of the pandemic as a way to share an understanding of architecture\, preservation\, and history of the Baltimore region with the public. Tickets are donation based. We encourage you to give what you can to support these organizations to help make up for lost tour and program revenue from the pandemic and create more virtual programs like this. \nUpon registering you will receive an email confirmation and a Zoom link. If you do not receive a link\, please contact mhudson@aiabalt.com. If you do not contact us at least 1 hour prior to the start of the program\, we cannot guarantee admittance. \nHope you can join us! \n  \n[REGISTER HERE]

SUMMARY:Learning Series: Exploring the Many Advantages of Big Brick (Glen Gery)
DESCRIPTION:Clay brick provides you with many advantages. Hundreds of different colors\, shapes and textures are just a few examples. We can also manufacture brick in many different sizes. Employing larger brick on your project can reduce the installed cost of masonry drastically and enhance its sustainability\, energy efficiency\, as well as reduce maintenance cost. \nTopics to be covered include: \nManufacturing \nWe will look at the way in which brick are made and how this affects their use with special emphasis given to larger units. At this point we will also talk about manufacturer’s efforts to be environmentally friendly. \nCost and Estimation \nWe will explore a typical wall and compare the final costs of modular brick to the larger sizes. \nMason’s Production \nThe main advantage gained from using larger masonry units is an increased in the wall area laid each day. We will compare production with a large unit versus a standard modular unit. \nCoursing and Patterns \nLarger brick may have different coursing requirements. We will look at these and give you all the tools you will need to make your building something to be proud of. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Baltimore – Rotterdam: Designing Cities (8 Week Webinar Series)
DESCRIPTION:Speakers:\nElina Karanastasi ex.s architecture\nMegan Elcrat\, Present Company \nThis webinar series is about design! During these eight weeks\, sixteen lectures\, we will open a dynamic discussion among Rotterdam and Baltimore-based designers on architecture and cities and draw conclusions on how design and policy can better the built environment for everyone to access. \nWe will observe how different architecture offices based in Rotterdam and in Baltimore operate in order to design (in) the city and improve citizens’ experience of space. \nEach week\, two designers will discuss design topics from a social\, spatial and architectural point of view specific to Rotterdam and Baltimore. \nDesigners have been combined to reflect similarities in size\, projects and methodology. Through lectures\, moderated dialogues\, and exchanges with the audience\, we will explore if and how the environment (historical\, political\, economical\, social\, environmental\, economies\, …) is truly determinant to the fail or success of a project and what that really means for the city\, the citizens and their well-being.

SUMMARY:Hybrid Panelization (BEC Baltimore + AIA Baltimore)
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, February 10\, 2022\nVia webinar\n12:30-1:30pm (Eastern)\n1 AIA LU (HSW) will be provided \nOff-site panelized construction is a growing and efficient method of production in commercial construction. Typically\, panels are fabricated completely off-site and transported and installed on-site as a full wall system. However\, due to potential irregularities in building materials\, challenges with ensuring continuity of control functions between panels can arise\, specifically related to air and water control. The Philly Live! Hotel and Casino opted for a hybrid approach combining pre-fabrication of the wall panels including the CFMF substrate\, gypsum sheathing and air/water resistive membrane\, allowing for appropriate sealing between panels on site prior to installation of the exterior insulation and cladding. Please join BEC-Baltimore and EDA Contractors in a discussion on this hybrid approach. \nIn this session\, participants will learn to: \n\nDifferentiate the positives and negatives of typical ‘panelization’ versus hybrid ‘panelization’;\nRecognize the sequence coordination involved in constructing a complicated exterior panel rainscreen wall system;\nExamine virtual design tools and functionality needed to synchronize the installer and design team; and\nAppraise multiple virtual design tools in realistic scenarios in an actual case study during a pandemic.\n\nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Thermally Modified Wood: A sustainable solution (Virgina Tech)
DESCRIPTION:Credits:  6.0 AIA LU \nWhen:  Thursday\, October 28\, 2021 \nWhere:  Cambria Hotel and Suites | 1 Helen Heneghan Way\, Rockville\, MD 20850 | Parking is free for participants \nCost:  $50 \nAbout this Course \nIn this course we will explore Thermally Modified Wood (TMW) as a material for interior and exterior uses. TMW are wood species harvested in a sustainable manner in the United States and subjected to high temperatures to modify the properties and color. TMW is chemical free\, has high decay resistance\, is more dimensionally stable\, and is a renewable\, sustainable way to sequester carbon in a useful building material. Due to the darker color of TMW\, it has been used as an alternative to many tropical hardwoods in decking and siding applications. We will discuss what is TMW\, how it is made\, its sustainability\, uses\, lessons in specification/application and a trip to visit a structure where it has been used in multiple applications. \nREGISTER HERE
