DESCRIPTION:On Saturday June 8\, 2024\, much of Charles Street will be closed to vehicular traffic for the Charles Street Promenade. We’re taking advantage of it with a tour of Station North led by Charlie Duff. Located in the heart of Baltimore\, Station North was the first area in Baltimore to receive the State designation as an Arts & Entertainment District in 2002. \nSpanning the neighborhoods of Charles North\, Greenmount West\, and Barclay\, Station North is a diverse collection of artist live-work spaces\, galleries\, rowhomes\, and businesses\, all just steps away from Penn Station\, Mount Vernon\, Charles Village\, the Maryland Institute College of Art\, the University of Baltimore\, and Johns Hopkins University. \nRegister here to join this tour. \nAbout the Tour Guide \nCharles Duff is a planner\, teacher\, developer\, and historian. Since 1987\, Mr. Duff has been President of Jubilee Baltimore\, a non-profit group that has built or rebuilt more than 300 buildings in historic Baltimore neighborhoods and is leading the development of the Station North Arts District. He has been President of the Baltimore Architecture Foundation and Chairman of the Board of the Patterson Park Community Development Corporation. A graduate of Amherst College and Harvard University\, he lectures widely and has taught at Johns Hopkins and Morgan State. He co-wrote Then and Now: Baltimore Architecture in 2005 and contributed to The Architecture of Baltimore. His book The North Atlantic Cities has just been published for North American release.

SUMMARY:Lovely Lane Tour
DESCRIPTION:Register here to join the Baltimore Architecture Foundation for a midday tour of Lovely Lane United Methodist Church. \nNearly a hundred years after the founding of American Methodism\, In 1883\, the church’s pastor\, Dr. John F. Goucher\, hired Stanford White\, the famous Victorian architect\, to build a new church as a centennial monument. The present building\, Lovely Lane United Methodist Church\, at 22nd and St Paul Streets was completed and dedicated in November 1887. After experiencing hard times in the 1960s and 1970s as much of its congregation moved away from the area\, the congregation began restoration work in earnest in 1984 on the 200th anniversary of the founding of Methodism here in Baltimore. The work included refurbishing the extraordinary domed ceiling that depicts the morning sky with the stars and planets as they were at 3a.m.\, November 6th\, 1887\, when the church was dedicated. \nLovely Lane’s Centennial Monument building has been a tourist and pilgrimage destination for more than a hundred years. In addition to the historic sanctuary and chapel\, it is home to the Lovely Lane Museum and research library. \nThis hour-long lunchtime tour will cover the main architectural rooms of the church\, including the sanctuary\, fellowship hall\, chapel\, and the Goucher room. The tour guides have extensive knowledge of the history of the architecture\, as well as the general American Methodist History that created this building.

SUMMARY:Hippodrome Theatre Tour
DESCRIPTION:Register here to join the Baltimore Architecture Foundation on a Doors Open afternoon tour of the Hippodrome Theatre. \nThe legendary Hippodrome Theatre was designed by noted theatre architect Thomas Lamb and opened on November 23\, 1914 as a movie palace that also showcased vaudeville performances. The theatre seated 3\,000 and in 1920 the average weekly attendance was 30\,000. Sound for the movies was provided by piano\, a Moller organ commissioned for the theatre\, and an orchestra. In the 1930’s\, the Hippodrome gained a reputation as a top vaudeville house\, presenting such notables as Bob Hope\, Jack Benny\, Red Skelton\, Benny Goodman and his orchestra\, Dinah Shore\, Martha Raye\, Milton Berle\, the Andrews Sisters and Morey Amsterdam. It was in The Hippodrome Theatre that Frank Sinatra first appeared with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and in 1939 with Harry James’ band. \nBusiness remained strong from the 30’s through the 1950’s with the last stage shows presented around 1959. Business dropped off during the 70’s and 80’s\, and the Hippodrome closed in 1990\, when it was the last operating movie theatre in downtown Baltimore. \nNow the curtain rises again at The France-Merrick Performing Arts Center at the Hippodrome. This is the culmination of a construction and restoration project that transforms and combines three significant historic buildings and one newly constructed building into a state-of-the-art showcase. These landmarks are the Western National Bank built in 1887\, the Eutaw Savings Bank built in 1888\, the Hippodrome Theatre\, and a new building at the corner of Baltimore and Eutaw Streets. Programming at this world-class venue will include touring Broadway shows and the best of the performing arts. \nPlease note that this tour does involve walking\, periods of standing\, and climbing stairs.

SUMMARY:The Peale Museum tour
DESCRIPTION:The Baltimore Architecture Foundation is happy to present a Doors Open evening tour of The Peale. Register here to join us Tuesday\, August 27 at 5:30pm. \nPlease join us at The Peale\, Baltimore’s Community Museum\, for a tour of the first museum that was purposefully built in the Americas. Our building housed many firsts that will be illuminated during the tour – including being the first commercial building to be illuminated by natural gaslight\, a material Rembrandt Peale manufactured in the museum’s back garden.  In 1813\, Rembrandt Peale\, a member of the first family of American artists and museum pioneers\, hired Baltimore architect Robert Cary Long to design a museum. Long produced what was essentially a large Federal Period townhouse with a spacious rear gallery extension.  Peale’s “Museum and Gallery of the Fine Arts” opened in August 1814 and hosted exhibitions that would be considered in today’s world as both those belonging in a fine art or natural history museum.  Scientific discovery played an important role in the early Peale Museum – contributing greatly to the new nation’s understanding of science\, technology and natural history. \nLike many museums of today\, Rembrandt had difficulty paying the hefty expenses of operating a museum; and in April 1830\, the museum property was sold at public auction.  Over the next 150+ years\, the building served many different purposes\, finally returning to its original intent as a museum. After a period of vacancy and a multi-year renovation\, it reopened as The Peale\, Baltimore’s Community Museum in 2022.
