DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 10\, 2024\n8:30 AM – 6:30 PM\nThe Center for Architecture and Design\n100 West Fayette St.\nSuite P-101\nBaltimore\, MD 21201 \nFREE  \n[REGISTER HERE] \nAbout this Event: \nIn the fall of 1985\, an interdisciplinary panel sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)\, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)\, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) met to exchange views on the history of ecological change within the Chesapeake Bay. The directive to the speakers was simple –– How might humankind learn from the past in order to protect and restore our natural resources for future generations? Fast forward nearly 40 years\, Estuary Urbanism has a similar intention –– inviting scientists\, humanists\, designers\, managers\, and engaged citizens –– to share long-term perspectives and valuable lessons motivated by natural events\, human activities\, and climate change. Although the discussion will be focused on the Chesapeake\, we hope the insights gained will be applicable to estuaries across North America and the world and the communities that dwell within them. The symposium will conclude with a narrated boat tour within the greater Port of Baltimore\, highlighting the privately and publicly owned marine terminals comprising it\, how these facilities operate\, and the depth of their importance to the local\, state\, regional\, and national economies. \nASLA LACES approved (full symposium 7 PDH|HSW\, morning or afternoon only 2.5 PDH|HSW\, boat tour 2 PDH|HSW). \n4 AICP CM credits approved.  \nRegister for the FULL symposium or MORNING (AM) or AFTERNOON (PM) sessions. Register here to join AIA Baltimore’s Emerging Professionals for ARE 5.0 study sessions. \nThis session will be hybrid\, offering virtual and in-person attendance options. \nAIA Baltimore’s Emerging Professionals Committee is excited to offer the Achieving Registration Together (A.R.T.) program\, a preparation series for the Architecture Registration Exam (ARE)\, taking place mid-March through May 2024. This third session will cover Practice Management and Project Management\, including an overview of the exam\, resources\, practice questions\, and study tips. Each subsequent session will focus on a different division.  \nPreparing for the AREs? Don’t know where to start or need some motivation? Looking for a study buddy or guidance from licensed peers? The ART program helps to prepare applicants for the AREs. Each session will be organized around a specific ARE 5.0 exam division and led by members of the Emerging Professionals Committee to include those who’ve recently passed exams and/or subject matter experts. Since 1987\, Mr. Duff has been President of Jubilee Baltimore\, a non-profit group that has planned some of Baltimore’s most successful neighborhoods and built or rebuilt more than 300 buildings. A graduate of Gilman\, Amherst\, and Harvard\, he has been President of the Baltimore Architecture Foundation and has participated in numerous civic initiatives. His book The North Atlantic Cities was published in the UK in 2019 and is now available in the US. \nThis garden party will take place outside in Edgevale Park\, weather permitting. SUMMARY:Lovely Lane Tour
DESCRIPTION:Register here to join the Baltimore Architecture Foundation for a midday tour of Lovely Lane United Methodist Church. \nNearly a hundred years after the founding of American Methodism\, In 1883\, the church’s pastor\, Dr. John F. Goucher\, hired Stanford White\, the famous Victorian architect\, to build a new church as a centennial monument. The present building\, Lovely Lane United Methodist Church\, at 22nd and St Paul Streets was completed and dedicated in November 1887. After experiencing hard times in the 1960s and 1970s as much of its congregation moved away from the area\, the congregation began restoration work in earnest in 1984 on the 200th anniversary of the founding of Methodism here in Baltimore. The work included refurbishing the extraordinary domed ceiling that depicts the morning sky with the stars and planets as they were at 3a.m.\, November 6th\, 1887\, when the church was dedicated. \nLovely Lane’s Centennial Monument building has been a tourist and pilgrimage destination for more than a hundred years. In addition to the historic sanctuary and chapel\, it is home to the Lovely Lane Museum and research library. \nThis hour-long lunchtime tour will cover the main architectural rooms of the church\, including the sanctuary\, fellowship hall\, chapel\, and the Goucher room. The tour guides have extensive knowledge of the history of the architecture\, as well as the general American Methodist History that created this building.

SUMMARY:Hippodrome Theatre Tour
DESCRIPTION:Register here to join the Baltimore Architecture Foundation on a Doors Open afternoon tour of the Hippodrome Theatre. \nThe legendary Hippodrome Theatre was designed by noted theatre architect Thomas Lamb and opened on November 23\, 1914 as a movie palace that also showcased vaudeville performances. The theatre seated 3\,000 and in 1920 the average weekly attendance was 30\,000. Sound for the movies was provided by piano\, a Moller organ commissioned for the theatre\, and an orchestra. In the 1930’s\, the Hippodrome gained a reputation as a top vaudeville house\, presenting such notables as Bob Hope\, Jack Benny\, Red Skelton\, Benny Goodman and his orchestra\, Dinah Shore\, Martha Raye\, Milton Berle\, the Andrews Sisters and Morey Amsterdam. It was in The Hippodrome Theatre that Frank Sinatra first appeared with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and in 1939 with Harry James’ band. \nBusiness remained strong from the 30’s through the 1950’s with the last stage shows presented around 1959. Business dropped off during the 70’s and 80’s\, and the Hippodrome closed in 1990\, when it was the last operating movie theatre in downtown Baltimore. \nNow the curtain rises again at The France-Merrick Performing Arts Center at the Hippodrome. This is the culmination of a construction and restoration project that transforms and combines three significant historic buildings and one newly constructed building into a state-of-the-art showcase. These landmarks are the Western National Bank built in 1887\, the Eutaw Savings Bank built in 1888\, the Hippodrome Theatre\, and a new building at the corner of Baltimore and Eutaw Streets. Programming at this world-class venue will include touring Broadway shows and the best of the performing arts. \nPlease note that this tour does involve walking\, periods of standing\, and climbing stairs.
