SUMMARY:Johnston Square Tour with ReBUILD Metro
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walking tour of Johnston Square with ReBUILD Metro. Tickets available now. \nJohnston Square is a neighborhood in central Baltimore\, located east of the Fallsway and west of the Oliver neighborhood\, bordered by Greenmount Cemetery at the north and Eager Street at the south. Join us for a tour to learn more about ReBUILD Metro and the work that they are doing to transform this neighborhood. \nOver the last two decades\, ReBUILD Metro has strategically invested over $125 million in East Baltimore\, remediating over 500 vacant properties and lots into new homes and assets and reducing vacancy by over 90% in its first two reinvestment areas of Oliver/Broadway East and Greenmount West. In 2015\, it expanded to Johnston Square\, where it is now working with public\, private\, and community partners on a $200 million plan to transform the area into a thriving and income-diverse neighborhood that provides opportunities and changes the lives of new and legacy residents alike—and that can serve as a blueprint for Baltimore’s regeneration. \nThis walking tour will focus on ReBUILD Metro’s neighborhood developments which include three blocks of completed rehabbed single-family homes\, a multi-family building currently under construction\, a library\, and multi-block park to start construction in August. This tour is outdoors and will take place rain or shine.

SUMMARY:A Conversation with the Past
DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder why Baltimore has so many beautiful buildings and architecturally diverse neighborhoods? In part\, it is due to 60 years of the efforts of the Baltimore City Commission for Historical and Architectural Preservation (CHAP)\, in designating sites\, buildings\, landscapes\, and neighborhoods as historic landmarks and districts. \nEric Holcomb\, Executive Director of the Baltimore City Commission for Historical and Architectural Preservation and author\, will give a talk\, A Conversation with the Past: Historic Preservation in Baltimore\, about the history and role of local historic preservation in the city. This talk will take place at Mount Clare Historic House Museum and will be followed by a garden party. Register to attend this event. \nEric obtained a Liberal Arts degree from St. Mary’s College of Maryland (1988) and a master’s degree in Preservation Studies at Boston University (1992). Between 1986 and 1994\, he worked for several restoration companies including Gibbons of Baltimore Church Restoration Company and Tidewater Restoration\, Inc. In 1994 he joined the staff of the Commission for Historical and Architectural Preservation (CHAP). In 2004 CHAP staff merged with the Department of Planning\, and in 2014 he became the Executive Director of CHAP where he has worked to further integrate and coordinate historic preservation into Planning activities. He is the author of City As Suburb: A History of Northeast Baltimore Since 1660. In 2016 he was awarded the Mayor’s Medallion for Meritorious Service and in 2018 the Honorable mention for the 14th annual Richard A. Lidinsky\, Sr. award for Excellence in Public Service. \nThis talk is approved for AIA CES (continuing education) 1.0 LU

SUMMARY:Hard Hat Tour - The Hammond\, Johnston Square
DESCRIPTION:Register to get a sneak peak at Baltimore’s newest multi-family housing development and Pratt Library location! \n The Hammond at Greenmount Park is 109 units of new affordable rental housing currently under construction in the Johnston Square neighborhood of Baltimore. The project is a joint venture development of Somerset Development Company\, New Community Partners\, and ReBUILD Metro\, Inc. \nThe Hammond is the first of three multifamily buildings that the Somerset team is developing in partnership with the community as outlined in the Johnston Square Vision Plan. The community-led\, Baltimore City-approved Johnston Square Vision Plan guides a multi-decade\, multi-hundred million dollar inclusive redevelopment effort in Johnston Square that rebuilds the neighborhood while protecting legacy residents. \nDesigned by Quinn Evans Architects and built by Harkins Builders\, the four-story building will have an impressive array of amenities including community meeting space\, a fitness center\, bicycle storage and rooftop gardening. Of particular note\, through an innovative public private partnership with the City of Baltimore\, the Project will include a new branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library on the ground floor of the building\, opening out onto the new public park being developed along Biddle Street by ReBUILD Metro and the community. \nThe Project’s all-electric design will achieve the Department of Energy’s Zero Energy Ready Home standard and the National Green Building Standard Silver designation. The Project also features a 150kW photovoltaic solar array. \nConstruction began in June 2024 and is anticipated to finish in August 2025. \nPlease plan to bring your own hard hat for this construction tour. If you do not have one\, a limited number will be available to borrow.
