SUMMARY:Boosting Multifamily Housing Availability through Single Stair Reform
DESCRIPTION:Join AIA Baltimore’s Committee on the Environment (COTE) for a lively discussion about newly-implemented single-stair reform featuring Julian Frost\, LEED AP O+M; City Councilman Ryan Dorsey; and Dustin Watson\, AIA. \nTwentieth Century building and zoning codes made walkable cities much more difficult to build. In doing so\, they cause many people to live in less healthy environments—as per the strong evidence that walkable places contribute to health\, social interactions\, and other benefits. The latest code detail to gain attention is the requirement\, common in the US\, that multifamily buildings have two stairwells. Adopted for fire protection\, the two-stair rule is less needed because of modern advancements in fire safety and building materials. For most of the world outside of the US\, single-stair buildings are standard. European cities owe much of their famous charm\, vitality\, and walkability to their fundamental building block: single-stair buildings. \nBaltimore is one of a handful of jurisdictions that have passed a single stair rule including Seattle\, New York\, Honolulu\, and Austin. In the last few years\, architects and housing policy wonks have caught on to the development potential and design possibilities foreclosed by this tiny code detail\, sparking a lively movement for “single-stair reform” in North America. \nAIA CES 1.0 LU|HSW approved \nRegistration is open now.

DESCRIPTION:AIA Baltimore’s Health and Wellness Design Committee presents: Lighting Control Design + the Patient/Clinician Experience on Thursday\, March 12th from 5:30-7:30pm The event will be held at the Center for Architecture and Design. \n5:30 to 6:30pm – Enjoy refreshments and meet with vendors. \n6:30 to 7:30pm – Hear from our respected panelists on Lighting Control Design + the Patient/Clinician Experience with audience questions to follow at the end. \nBespoke lighting design and the use of curated lighting controls is an integral part of how patients experience a space and how a clinician functions in a space. The same space needs to allow for visual acuity\, patient rest and recovery\, and intuitive controls use by the facility and clinician teams. There are now time-tested strategies and emerging innovations in lighting design. Use of daylight harvesting and sensor-based dimming is now commonplace\, and lighting strategies akin to nature’s circadian rhythms are backed by evidence-based design research. Ongoing considerations include choosing light fixtures for ease of cleaning to maximize infection control\, and a focus on patient and clinician satisfaction. He leads the Healthcare Market Sector for Burdette\, Koehler\, Murphy and Associates\, Inc. in Baltimore\, MD and is an active participant in ASHRAE. He serves as the Chair of ASHRAE Standard 62.1 Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality and curates submissions for the regular Indoor Environmental Quality Column for ASHRAE Journal. In addition\, Dr. Burley is as a member of ASHRAE Standard 170 Ventilation of Health Care Facilities\, TC9.6 Healthcare Facilities\, and ASHRAE Standard 241 Control of Infectious Aerosols. \n  \n \nOWNER: Holly Boyd\, Sheppard Pratt \nDr. Boyd received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy from Misericordia University in Dallas\, PA and received her Doctor of Occupational Therapy from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia\, PA. Dr. Boyd has presented and been published nationally and internationally. She has been honored to share her knowledge of and experience in working as an occupational therapist as an adjunct professor and as a guest lecturer. Throughout her career she has worked in\, and overseen service provision in a variety of settings including in-patient rehabilitation\, long-term and acute care\, mental health\, intermediate care\nfacilities\, group homes\, and home health services. With a large focus on function\, she specializes in the development and structuring of facility operations\, programs\, and procedures in order to enhance the patient and staff experience and to achieve greater organizational outcomes. \n \nARCHITECT: Kim McMurray\, BHFC \nMcMurray\, offering an expertise in behavioral and mental health design\, is a practicing healthcare planner and architect with over 40 years of leadership experience in healthcare on academic\, non-profit\, and private medical campus architecture. McMurray has a decade of experience from the owner’s perspective and collaborating with multi-disciplinary user groups\, thereby embracing a unique perspective and response to client needs; applying her knowledge of clinical operations\, evidence based design\, lean operational planning; to lead projects from programming and concept development through design. McMurray is Principal of Behavioral Health Facility Consulting\, LLC (BHFC Design) a 100% Woman Owned Enterprise \n \nLIGHTING DESIGNER: Sean Darra\, Lightglass \nMr. Darras is the Founder and CEO of LUXTECH\, LLC\, a leader in developing advanced light engines for the architectural sector. He has also founded Lightglass\, a simulated window brand installed in over 150 hospitals\, as well as Lightly\, a sustainable lighting brand. Mr. Darras earned degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Business at the University of Delaware and has completed executive studies at The Wharton School of Business. Mr. Darras is an active triathlete and currently resides in the Greater Philadelphia Area with this wife and two children.
