DESCRIPTION:Register here to join AIA Baltimore’s Historic Resources Committee for a tour of the renovations underway at MacDonough Hall on the campus of the US Naval Academy in Annapolis. \nAIA Baltimore’s Historic Resources Committee is offering a unique opportunity to view a historically-listed building on the campus of the US Naval Academy. Originally built in 1903 as a boathouse\, the 128\,000 square foot\, MacDonough Hall interior is being renovated as the Physical Education training center. The exterior granite walls\, steel and terra cotta windows\, and copper roof are being restored. \nThe tour will circle the Beaux Arts complex designed by Ernest Flagg\, passing by the twin Dahlgren Hall and the main Bancroft Hall. We will then climb the scaffolding to see the huge stone carvings and restoration work\, and finish by viewing the interior work in progress. \nTour guides will be Naomi Doddington\, project manager for Consigli Construction\, and Ward Bucher\, Historical Architect and co-chair of AIA Baltimore’s Historic Resources Committee. \nAIA CES – 1.0LU|HSW approved \nPlease note: This tour is intended for professionals in the AEC industries. This event will take place within the church’s sanctuary. \nLovely Lane United Methodist Church is a c. l885 Romanesque-style church designed by renowned architect Stanford White. Historic preservation and restoration has occurred in multiple phases since 1980. This presentation will discuss the existing conditions in 1984 when presenter Donald Kann began his restoration work. It will also touch on future opportunities for the church as an arts and neighborhood center. \nDonald Kann is a principal in charge at Michael Graves Architecture and directs many of the firm’s large scale\, multi-disciplined projects throughout the mid-Atlantic region. In addition to the Lovely Lane project\, Donald has been involved in many of Baltimore’s most notable preservation or adaptive reuse projects including City Hall\, Garrett Jacobs Mansion\, Hebrew Orphan Asylum\, Patterson Park Observatory\, and many others. His work has received design and preservation awards from organizations such as AIA\, Maryland Historical Trust\, and Preservation Maryland. It was accessible and inexpensive material to use in the self-trained process of stack lamination. As his work progressed\, he discovered the linear strata inherent in the medium.
