SUMMARY:Architecture Sketching in Mount Vernon Place
DESCRIPTION:Join architect and Morgan State University architecture professor\, Gabriel Kroiz\, AIA\, for a beginner sketch class\, while learning about the rich architectural history of Mount Vernon Place. \nThis one-hour class is geared to beginners\, and to learning an “elevation”: an easy entry point to architectural drawings. We will focus on 8 West Mount Vernon Place\, pointing out the organizing grid and proportions and introducing architectural terms such as balustrade\, piano nobile\, etc. Please note: this tour will be limited to twelve participants in light of COVID-19 restrictions. Facemasks optional. \n8 West Mount Vernon Place (now the Mt Vernon Club) was built around 1842\, and is one of the oldest homes on Mount Vernon Place. \nPreviously known as the Blanchard Randall House and the Tiffany-Fisher House\, the home was built by William Tiffany\, a wealthy Baltimore commission merchant. The building is a fine example of the Greek Revival architectural style and set a high standard for the new homes being built around the Washington Monument. In 1941\, The Mount Vernon Club purchased the building\, which has housed the Club since then. \nFor more info on the history of Mount Vernon Place\, see the Mount Vernon Place Conservancy’s website. \nInstructor \nGabriel Kroiz\, AIA founder and principle of Kroiz Architecture has over 25 years of experience as an architect\, builder\, and educator. As an architect\, Kroiz’s experience includes award-winning projects in the US and Asia. As a builder\, he has focused on small\, detail intensive projects which allow for a high level of research and experimentation with materials and their application. In 2008 Kroiz joined the School of Architecture and Planning at Morgan State University as its first Program Director working to achieve the school’s missions of providing access to the design professions for underrepresented minorities and performing research focused on the redevelopment of Baltimore and the surrounding region. Kroiz is also a member of the board of directors of the Baltimore Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Baltimore). \nPlease bring: \nA sketchbook of any size (if you have one)\, and assorted pens and pencils. There may be limited seating available in the park. You may also wish to bring a folding chair\, and bottled water. \nDon’t forget to stop by the Charles Street Promenade that will be happening all day from 9:00 am to 9:00pm on North Charles street. SUMMARY:Remembering Laurel Cemetery: Lecture & Exhibition Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture to remember Laurel Cemetary\, a resting place for Black Civil War veterans and notable civil rights activists… \nAbout this event\nLaurel Cemetery was incorporated in 1852 as Baltimore’s first nondenominational cemetery for African Americans. It quickly became a popular place of burial for people across Black Baltimore’s socioeconomic spectrum\, including 230 Black Civil War veterans and notables such as Civil Rights activist Reverend Harvey Johnson. \nIn 1958 and after a series of lawsuits failed to prevail in the courts\, Laurel Cemetery was leveled. Today it is the site of the Belair-Edison Crossing Shopping Center\, and home to several businesses. However\, many current patrons and nearby residents have no knowledge of the site’s former purpose and significance. Join Dr. Isaac Shearn of the Laurel Cemetery Memorial Project to learn more about the important history of the site and how we can preserve its memory. \nOur Presenters \nRon Castanzo (UB)- discusses the archaeological portion of the project \nElgin Klugh (CSU)- I discuss our efforts for public outreach and engagement \nGlen Blackwell – discusses the efforts of the Baltimore African American Historical and Genealogical Association in researching death certificates \nDonna Hollie – discusses biographies of individuals buried at Laurel Cemetery \nIsaac Shearn – discusses issues regarding the closing and demolition of the cemetery and the formation and design of the Timeline Exhibit \nALL PROCEEDS WILL BE DONATED TO THE LAUREL CEMETERY MEMORIAL FUND \nSponsor This Special Event\nMajor sponsor ($500): Company logo on website and marketing materials. SUMMARY:Learning Series: Exploring the Many Advantages of Big Brick (Glen Gery)
DESCRIPTION:Clay brick provides you with many advantages. Hundreds of different colors\, shapes and textures are just a few examples. We can also manufacture brick in many different sizes. Employing larger brick on your project can reduce the installed cost of masonry drastically and enhance its sustainability\, energy efficiency\, as well as reduce maintenance cost. \nTopics to be covered include: \nManufacturing \nWe will look at the way in which brick are made and how this affects their use with special emphasis given to larger units. At this point we will also talk about manufacturer’s efforts to be environmentally friendly. \nCost and Estimation \nWe will explore a typical wall and compare the final costs of modular brick to the larger sizes. \nMason’s Production \nThe main advantage gained from using larger masonry units is an increased in the wall area laid each day. We will compare production with a large unit versus a standard modular unit. \nCoursing and Patterns \nLarger brick may have different coursing requirements. We will look at these and give you all the tools you will need to make your building something to be proud of. \nREGISTER HERE

If you do not contact us at least 1 hour prior to the start of the program\, we cannot guarantee admittance. \nThe Baltimore Architecture Foundation (BAF) and Baltimore Heritage present the Virtual Histories Series: 30 minute live virtual tours and presentations focusing on Baltimore architecture\, preservation and history. Hosted every Friday at 1:00 pm EST. \nTickets are donation based. We encourage you to give what you can to support BAF and Baltimore Heritage. Your support helps us make up for lost tour and program revenue from COVID-19 and create more virtual programs like this. \nAbout this Presentation \nLaurel Cemetery was incorporated in 1852 as Baltimore’s first nondenominational cemetery for African Americans. \nAbout Our Presenter \nIsaac Shearn earned his PhD in 2014 at the University of Florida and is an adjunct professor at the Community College of Baltimore County\, University of Baltimore\, and Coppin State University. His research is on the archaeology and ethnohistory of the Caribbean and South America\, with a focus on public archaeology\, developing inclusive and participatory methods. His recent efforts have been oriented toward integrating three-dimensional photogrammetric mapping techniques with more traditional archaeological methods. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Baltimore Deco: Architectural Optimism in the Interwar Years
DESCRIPTION:This program is hosted on Zoom. Upon registering you will receive an email confirmation and a Zoom link. If you do not receive a link\, please contact ndennies@aiabalt.com. Your support helps us make up for lost tour and program revenue from COVID-19 and create more virtual programs like this. \nAbout this Presentation: \nThis talk will consider how an international design movement\, Art Deco\, found its way into Baltimore during the 1920s and ’30s. Fueled by a robust manufacturing sector\, the city became fertile ground for a wide-ranging architecture that mixed freely with the prevailing design trends of the day (albeit leaning toward the traditional); an important representative of America’s major industrial cities in the interwar years. Lesser-known examples of Baltimore Deco will be shared\, and the talk will also highlight a few optimistic building projects undertaken in the midst of the Great Depression. \nAbout the Presenter: \nMelissa Blair is a history professor at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) and studies the history of architecture\, landscapes\, and material culture. She is co-author with Richard Striner of Washington and Baltimore Art Deco: A Design History of Neighboring Cities (Johns Hopkins University Press\, 2014). Prior to joining the Department of History\, she worked for more than 15 years as an architectural historian and historic preservationist for a variety of public\, private\, and nonprofit organizations. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Baltimore – Rotterdam: Designing Cities (8 Week Webinar Series)
DESCRIPTION:Speakers:\nElina Karanastasi ex.s architecture\nMegan Elcrat\, Present Company \nThis webinar series is about design! During these eight weeks\, sixteen lectures\, we will open a dynamic discussion among Rotterdam and Baltimore-based designers on architecture and cities and draw conclusions on how design and policy can better the built environment for everyone to access. \nWe will observe how different architecture offices based in Rotterdam and in Baltimore operate in order to design (in) the city and improve citizens’ experience of space. \nEach week\, two designers will discuss design topics from a social\, spatial and architectural point of view specific to Rotterdam and Baltimore. \nDesigners have been combined to reflect similarities in size\, projects and methodology. Through lectures\, moderated dialogues\, and exchanges with the audience\, we will explore if and how the environment (historical\, political\, economical\, social\, environmental\, economies\, …) is truly determinant to the fail or success of a project and what that really means for the city\, the citizens and their well-being.

DESCRIPTION:This program is hosted on Zoom. Upon registering you will receive an email confirmation and a Zoom link. If you do not receive a link\, please contact ndennies@aiabalt.com. Your support helps us make up for lost tour and program revenue from COVID-19 and create more virtual programs like this. \nAbout this Presentation: \nDid you know there is a ship graveyard in Baltimore’s Curtis Creek? Join us for a talk by Maryland’s State Underwater Archaeologist\, Dr. Susan Langley\, to discover the submerged and hidden vessels off of Hawkins Point! Although known mostly as the home of the U.S. Coast Guard since 1897\, the bustling waterfront industries of Curtis Bay and Creek have long included shipyards and other maritime businesses. So it’s not unusual that these waters contain a disproportionate number of scrapped and abandoned vessels. What is surprising is the nature and histories of many of these watercraft\, which include mid-19th century schooners to the last passenger steamers operating as recently as 1963. \nAbout the Presenter: \nDr. Susan Langley lectures internationally on a broad range of subjects including maritime archaeology\, textile technology\, piracy\, and the archaeology and present practices of bees and beekeeping globally. Although her “day-job” is Maryland’s State Underwater Archaeologist directing the Maryland Maritime Archaeology Program for more than 25 of its 30 years\, she is also the beekeeper for the hive at Government House in Annapolis. Dr. Langley is an adjunct professor at several colleges and universities\, where she teaches underwater archaeology and the history and anthropology of piracy. She also taught maritime archaeology in Thailand for several years through UNESCO. She is a Master SCUBA diver instructor\, judges Maryland’s History Day competition\, and lectures and leads expeditions for Zegrahm Expeditions. \nREGISTER HERE
