BALTIMORE, MD – Lexington Market, Inc., a private, nonprofit corporation that operates historic Lexington Market on behalf of the City of Baltimore, has awarded a contract for architectural, engineering, and specialty consulting services for the Transform Lexington Market Initiative to Murphy & Dittenhafer Architects.
The award represents the first major step in the Transform Lexington Market Initiative, an ambitious plan to revitalize a beloved but aging Baltimore institution. The Initiative comprises a major renovation of the Market’s physical plant while maintaining the Market in continuous operation.
“I am eager to take the next step towards our plans to renovate the historic Lexington Market ,” said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. “With the investments that my administration has already made at our public markets, including Broadway, Northeast Market and Avenue Market, and our recently announced public-private partnership proposal for Cross Street market, this announcement for Lexington Market will help ensure that our historic public markets will continue a play a significant role in Baltimore’s communities.”
Murphy & Dittenhafer was selected by the Building Committee of the Board of Lexington Market Inc. July 30, after a competitive review process that began with a request for proposals in May 2015. The Committee chose M & D based on its presentation, experience, and deep knowledge of the region.
Contract terms for the three-phased project of development of design, construction documents, and construction oversight are still being negotiated.

Murphy & Dittenhafer, an architectural services firm with offices in Baltimore, Maryland and York, Pennsylvania, was founded in 1985 by architects Frank Dittenhafer FAIA and Michael Murphy FAIA, graduates of the University of Pennsylvania who were influenced by the work and teachings of Louis Kahn, Robert Venturi, and Laurie Olin. Since that time, the architects have worked on dozens of regional public, commercial, and university projects, with the goal of using revolutionary yet timeless design to create inspiring spaces that enrich lives.
M & D’s public market experience includes the Annapolis City Dock Market House in Maryland along with the York Central Market and the Lancaster Central Market in Pennsylvania. Their Baltimore City experience includes notable projects such as The Tremont Grand, Old St. Paul’s Church, First & Franklin Presbyterian and The University of Baltimore Student Center. In addition, the firm has helped transform many Baltimore landmarks including the nearby Hippodrome Theatre while also contributing to the revitalization of the West Side/Bromo Arts District among other neighborhoods.
